People with serious liver disease such as Hepatitis C or B, cirrhosis, or Wilson's disease are not recommended as stem cell donors.  However a person who has had Hepatitis A but is now recovered can be donor.

  • People who received organ or bone marrow transplant.
  • People who have kidney disease such as glomerulonephritis or polysystic kidney disease.
  • People who have hemophilia or Factor V leiden.
  • People who have had hematologic malignancy.
  • People who have HIV.

These are the common conditions that will preclude people from donation. There may be other conditions as well.  Please check with your own doctor if you question whether you can be a donor.

The Cost of Your Test Kit Includes:

  • Test kit
  • Handling
  • Shipping the kit to the donor, return of samples to the lab
  • Lab testing for at least six markers (HLA-A, B, DR) - additional markers available (see above)
  • Reporting to the patient's physician or search coordinator
  • Sending a hard copy report to the donor for his/her medical records

In the designated places on the enclosed test requisition, you will need to provide the following information so that we can forward the results to the patient's doctor or search coordinator:

  • Name and address of facility where the patient is being treated
  • The name of the doctor, transplant coordinator or contact person who will receive the results
  • The contact person's phone number, fax number and email address

Results will be sent directly to that person upon completion of testing.

  • Are there age requirements for private testing?

    No.  The donor is basically purchasing a test result.  Kashi does not have age and health restrictions.

  • Can my children who are under age 18 be privately tested to see if they match a family member or friend?

    Yes, you can authorize testing for any child who is under the age of 18 as long as you are the legal guardian and you sign our Release/Consent for testing minor children as indicated on the Kashi Clinical Laboratories' "Private Test Requisition (Consent) Form".

  • What happens if I am identified as a possible match?

    In most cases, once you are identified as a match, you become part of the treatment and all your costs will be picked up by the patient’s insurance or whoever is paying for the transplant. Check with the transplant team to confirm your status regarding donor costs.

    The initial testing cost is not covered by insurance, as it is considered elective; finding a positive match is very difficult and insurance companies generally are unwilling to pay for it.

    As a potential donor you will receive a physical and a complete medical screening to ensure that you can donate safely. And, medical personnel will determine whether you have any communicable conditions that could harm the patient. Only after this screening will you be deemed a match.
